Taiwan faces 2-day freeze with temps around 10°C

TAIPEI (TVBS News) — The Central Weather Administration (中央氣象署), Taiwan's meteorological agency, issued a cold weather advisory early Friday (Dec. 26) for six counties as temperatures plunged to around 10 degrees Celsius (50°F) or lower across northern and eastern Taiwan. A continental cold air mass has gripped the island, prompting warnings for New Taipei City (新北市), Yilan County (宜蘭縣), and four other counties.

New Taipei City's Shiding District (石碇區) recorded the coldest temperature this morning at 10.1 degrees Celsius (50.2°F), while Taoyuan City's (桃園市) Yangmei District reported 10.3 degrees Celsius (50.5°F). Meteorologist Wu Te-jung (吳德榮) confirmed the cold air mass has brought intermittent rain to northern and eastern Taiwan. Northern Taiwan will remain wet and cold today, with temperatures expected to rise slightly tomorrow but still remain chilly, Wu noted.

The administration issued a heavy rain advisory for four counties, warning of significant rainfall along the Keelung North Coast, Yilan, and Taipei's mountainous areas. Meteorologist Lin De-en (林得恩) confirmed the cold air mass has not yet subsided. The northern peak of Yushan (玉山), Taiwan's highest mountain, saw snowfall this morning, Lin noted.

Parts of Taiwan could experience temperatures around 10 degrees Celsius (50°F) over the next two days, Wu added. Northern Taiwan will range from 10 to 16 degrees Celsius (50°F to 60.8°F), central Taiwan from 11 to 20 degrees Celsius (51.8°F to 68°F), southern Taiwan from 13 to 24 degrees Celsius (55.4°F to 75.2°F), and eastern Taiwan from 12 to 23 degrees Celsius (53.6°F to 73.4°F). The snow line remains at approximately 3,000 meters (9,843 feet), with a chance of snowfall on high mountains like Hehuanshan (合歡山) and Xueshan (雪山). ◼
